How to Get Rid of Baby Squirrels in Your Attic

From gnawing at pipes to chewing their way through insulation, baby squirrels in your attic can do significant damage. They can also leave feces and urine, creating an odor problem. Additionally, they can cause a fire hazard by chewing on exposed wires.

The best solution is to prevent squirrels from entering your home in the first place. You can do this by covering their entry points with 1/4″ wire mesh or a screen door. This is especially important during the breeding season when the squirrels are most active.

Nesting Nuisances: Dealing with Baby Squirrels in Your Attic

If you already have squirrels in your attic, try to frighten them into leaving on their own. This can be done by banging on the rafters or placing a radio tuned to an all-talk station about 6′ away from the nest (squirrels don’t like noises). If you have a bright light and can point it directly at the nest, this will also work. Often the mother will move her babies if she knows of an alternate nest site.

If you can’t frighten the squirrels to leave on their own, consider having a professional humanely trap and relocate them. However, this option is not available in all states, and it’s important to check with your local animal control agency for legalities before attempting relocation. You can also ask a professional to install an excluding device, which will allow the squirrels to leave but keep them out. A professional will also be able to seal up any openings into the attic, preventing future infestations.
